Susan Andersen: Coming Undonw - 4rd "Marine" Series

See that girl on the cover of Coming Undone? That’s P.J. Morgan. She and Jared Hamilton were a couple of teenagers living on the streets of Denver in my book Hot & Bothered. When I began their storyline, Jared was the brother of H&B’s heroine and central to the plot of her book. P.J., on the other hand, was only intended to be a walk-on character.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the drawing board. That little girl captured my heart and my imagination like no character before her has ever done. Usually it takes a great deal of writing before I fully understand who my characters are, but I knew P.J. in a way I can’t explain. I could see her as clearly as if she stood before me—and I am not a visual woman. She was something no child should ever be—a throwaway kid scorned by her own mother, but with a core of sweetness that nothing could alter.

Ford Evans Hamilton opened his eyes and blinked the blurry room into focus. Pain splintered through his skull and throbbed along his nerve-endings, and he lifted a cautious hand to probe the back of his head. It felt like an overripe cantaloupe.
What the hell had happened? Hearing muted voices, the clink of heavy crystal, his eyebrows drew together. Was there a party going on?

Images flickered and floated on the peripheries of his mind, and his brow cleared. Ah, yes. That's right. There was a party- the one he'd thrown to watch McMurphy squirm. Well, McMurphy and one or two others, but the point was he had guests and he'd come into the library for a box of cigars to go with the after-dinner brandy. And. . . Jared had been here, right? He scowled as bits of their argument came drifting back and he suddenly recalled the shove his son had given him as he'd stormed for the door. That boy was nothing but a blotch on the Hamilton name. Both his children were big disappointments.

Susan Andersen: Head over heels - 1st "Marine" Series

This is the first of three connected stories. I've never done this before-- usually when I finish a story, I'm finished and more than ready to move on to something entirely new. But as I was writing HEAD OVER HEELS, I was struck with a sudden need to write not only Cooper's story, but Zach's and Rocket's as well.

They were all Marines together. Coop and Rocket (John Miglionni) have since left the service and gone on to new pursuits, but they've got a shared history and a friendship that I felt I just had to explore. So even though it's new territory for me, I've been having fun telling their stories. I hope you have as much fun reading them.
